16 Jul Toyota Open to Supplying Hydrogen Engines to Competitors
Toyota Racing has shared the following:
Toyota has confirmed it is open to supplying hydrogen combustion engines to other competitors, as the manufacturer used Le Mans 24 Hours race week to run the first LMP fitted with a hydrogen internal combustion engine (ICE) and liquid hydrogen storage.
The TR LH2 Racing Prototype is built on the same chassis as Toyota’s TR010 HYBRID Hypercar and competed at Le Mans on 13-14 June. It marks the first time a liquid hydrogen-fuelled prototype of this scale has run publicly at the Sarthe, following Toyota’s earlier hydrogen concept, and is intended to advance the development of hydrogen technology in motorsport.
Speaking to media at Le Mans, Toyota Motor Corporation Executive Vice President Nakajima set out the company’s thinking on where hydrogen fits in motorsport’s near-term future: Toyota sees the demonstration as a first step toward a hydrogen society, and believes now is a moment for collaboration rather than competition. He confirmed Toyota is open to supplying hydrogen engines to other teams as a way of expanding the hydrogen ecosystem across motorsport. It’s a notably open stance from a manufacturer that has invested years and significant engineering resource into hydrogen combustion.
This activity supports Toyota’s continuous development of hydrogen technology and infrastructure, as well as helping build relationships to expand the possibilities of hydrogen through the challenge of motorsport.
